Rafael's Farm: On Its Way To Recovery

On one side, Rafael's Farm faces a farmland with a scenic and refreshing view of the mountains of Leyte. On the other, it faces the remains of a once beautiful Bali-inspired hut restaurant crushed by the wind into the ground.

Rafael's Farm, once flocked by tourists because of its beauty, still reflects the damage caused by one of the world's strongest storms in 2013. Yet, even if the situation in the property is far from normal, it continues to welcome visitors who are looking for a place where they can eat and unwind at the same time.

After a 3-hour drive from Kuting Reef Resort in Southern Leyte, we decided to have lunch at Rafael's Farm. We arrived at the place in the mid-afternoon so there were few people about.

Since the main restaurant has yet to be rebuilt, the function hall, usually used to host events, serves as the temporary restaurant. The rustic space has a cozy vibe with plenty of wood tones and nice furnishings. It has glass walls that capture the warmth of the provincial sun and views of the majestic mountains. It also has a large terrace perfect for alfresco dining.

Outside, the property is beautifully landscaped with well manicured lawns, towering trees and gardens. In the middle, there is a man-made lake and river where guests can take a boat ride. There is also a tree house and an outdoor gazebo.

The well-priced menu includes mains such as Native Chicken Tinola, Shrimp Sinigang, Crab with Gata, Baby Back Ribs, Fish Kinilaw, Grilled Herb Chicken, and Crispy Pata. Food normally takes 20-30 minutes to be served since everything is freshly cooked. And the taste? The food is delicious and flavorful.

Though the property may be far from being back to normal, Rafael's Farm is still a place worthy of our visit. The continued support of tourists just like us, is probably its best hope of regaining its former glory.
